MMR and egg allergies (January 02, 2008)

Can my baby still have the MMR injection if he has an egg allergy?

The MMR vaccine is made using egg, but your baby can usually still have the vaccine, even if he has an egg allergy. If your child has had a very severe allergic reactionto eating egg, such as breathing problems, a rash or a swollen mouth and throat, let your doctor or practice nurse know well in advance. They can then make alternative arrangements for the vaccine to be given safely - usually in the paediatric ward of the local hospital. Increasing evidence shows that children with egg allergy can be successfully immunised without suffering any adverse effects. If your child dislikes or refuses to eat egg, this is not the same as an egg allergy and will not prevent him from having the vaccine.
